Building a research data & AI platform for medicine at the IKARD
During the Health AI & CyberSec Summit 2026, together with Hubert Łazarczyk, Head of the Center for Digital Medicine at the National Institute of Cardiology, we presented how we built a healthcare data platform on AWS that unifies structured clinical records and medical imaging datasets.
Agenda
- The platform at a glance
- Clinical data: from hospital to FHIR and OMOP
- Medical imaging at scale: DICOM
- Research environments and lessons learned
Key topics
- what the platform is and why it splits into a controlled data platform and isolated research environments, each on its own AWS account;
- how clinical data is extracted from the hospital system into FHIR, the interoperability standard for healthcare data;
- why no off-the-shelf tool does it, and why FHIR alone is not enough so we also convert to the OMOP data format;
- how 530 TB of medical imaging data is stored and served with AWS HealthImaging, pulled on demand, and de-identified;
- how researchers actually work inside isolated per-project environments, and the honest lessons and trade-offs from building the whole thing on managed AWS services.
